I don’t want to be anything other than me.” I’m tired of looking ’round rooms wondering what I’ve got to do or who I’m supposed to be. All I have to do is think of me and I have peace of mind. The One Tree Hill theme song, sung by Gavin DeGraw says, “I don’t want to be anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately. They know that no matter what struggles life throws at them, turning to their sisters will help them overcome anything. In their first year, Kappa Phi experienced their share of growing pains, however, they have learned from them. I was able to relate the experiences the characters go through to what Kappa Phi has gone through as a chapter. I think we watched six seasons in a few days. One Tree Hill almost consumed our lives more than recruitment did. We spent countless hours planning, decorating and painting all while watching One Tree Hill. Florida Atlantic University does not have Greek housing therefore, recruitment took over my apartment. Four Square even set my apartment location as the Kappa Phi chapter house…yes, I am the mayor! My favorite experience has been turning my Boca Raton apartment into the chapter house. They continue to teach me new things every day. I am so proud of this chapter of women and all they have accomplished. The overall feeling of pride is hard to express. New forecast: Partly cloudy, but mostly sunny skies ahead.Īs recruitment week closed and I reflected on the experience, it was very hard to believe it was over, especially recalling all the preparation and effort spent prior. The chapter welcomed 62 new members, doubling its size! The storm made landfall, leaving much damage (a.k.a. Weather Report Update: Kappa Phi Chapter at Florida Atlantic University indeed took their first formal recruitment by storm. Even though to some it was just a philanthropy event, to us it was the start of a new era at FAU. Still to this day I cannot believe we won, but someone caught the moment on tape and it warms my heart every time I watch it. We were freaking out when it came down to us and another sorority for first place. At the end of the night the results were announced, and we were nervous, hoping to get at least 3rd place. Luckily, the women were so great the audience was hanging on to their every move. But the real performance was in the audience… if anyone watched me, they would have seen DANCE MOM STATUS!!!! I cringed, cheered, and even did most of the moves right along with them. ![]() ![]() On the night of the event, it was so exciting to watch the women’s hard work pay off! We recorded the performance so we could all watch it again later. pseudo “mom” at times), I attended the dance practices and helped cheer on the group. They worked together to choreograph a dance, make costumes, and raise money for “Phi Delt’s Best Dance Crew.”Īs the LC (a.k.a. The women practiced for the philanthropy event for WEEKS before the performance. When it comes to philanthropy events, those of us who are Greek-affiliated know that sometimes it is life or death that we must WIN THIS PHILANTHROPY EVENT! Katherine Getty (LC who loves Panhellenic) will hate me for saying this but….sometimes we just have to show the other sororities that Sigma Kappa is the best… and we experienced one of those days. Watching them give 110% brings me joy and makes me love my job even more. The chapter women are constantly working to prove themselves and are showing the Greek community that we are top competitors on campus. People are curious to see if we will succeed or fail socially on campus. On Wednesday night, the entire chapter went to support some fellow chapter women participating in a philanthropy event for Phi Delta Theta fraternity (another personal favorite).īeing the “new” chapter on campus means eyes are on us at all times. One night we watched Mystic Pizza (a personal favorite of mine). Last week, they prepared for Initiation with many fun inspiration nights. It is my third month living in Boca and I am loving every second of it! The women continue to amaze me with their striving to be great. One of the many joys of being a residential consultant is seeing the constant growth of the chapter throughout the year.
